Welfare California Amount: How much do people on welfare get in California?

The topic of welfare is a hotly contested one in the United States of America and will no doubt be at the center of debate during the next presidential election. In fact in 2022, welfare benefits have served to help those from low income households navigate the cost of living crisis that is plaguing the country.

In fact residents of California are particularly feeling the pinch with the state famous for having the highest gas prices of all 50 American states. In fact, in June this year, the state set a record when the average price for a gallon of gas reached 6.44 dollars, which is almost three full dollars above the national average.

High gas prices have a direct impact on the cost of living with everything ranging from food, rent and utilities shooting up this year.

However, residents of California who meet the eligibility criteria can avail several welfare schemes that are designed to tackle various facets such as food, employment, disability, health care and outright cash assistance.

Overseen by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS) here are some of the welfare schemes open to residents in California depending on their need.

Types of welfare in California

CalWORKS is a program designed to provide cash aid services to families with children. The final amount you will receive depends on your income level, location and household size.

2. CalFresh

CalFresh is essentially the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly known as food stamps, welfare program rebranded in California.

The maximum monthly allotment for a single individual is currently 250 dollars.

3. Medi-Cal

Similar to SNAP Medi-Cal is California’s version of Medicaid rebranded. The program aims to help individuals and families who struggle financially to pay for a range of medical services using a combination of federal and state tax funding.

While these are the three largest welfare programs in California, a comprehensive list of welfare services can be found on the CDSS website.
