Jenna Ortega didn’t just act straight Wednesdayshe was also invested in making the character authentic and made changes to the script while on set.
While performing on Armchair Expert with Dax ShepardOrtega opened up about what parts of the scripts she changed.
“I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set the way I had to Wednesday because it’s so easy to fall into that category, especially with this type of show,” Ortega said. “Everything she does, everything I had to play, made no sense at all for her character. Her being in a love triangle made no sense. There was a line about this dress that she has to wear to a school dance, and she says, ‘Oh my god, I love it! I can’t believe I said that. I literally hate myself.’ And I had to say, ‘No, there’s no way.'”
That Scream VI actor added, “There were times on that set where I even became unprofessional, in a way where I just started changing lines. The script supervisor thought I was going to come up with something, and then I would sit down with the writers and they would say, ‘Wait, what happened to the scene?’ And I would have to go through and explain why I couldn’t do certain things.”
Ortega said she was “protective” of the character she portrayed, and while she didn’t like some of the “emotional” arcs in the show, she knew it was necessary. The star of the Netflix series also said that the viral dance scene was originally supposed to be a flash mob scene.
“Initially it was going to be a flash mob and she was going to start dancing and everyone was going to pick it up and start dancing with her. And I vetoed that, because why would she be okay with that? I said, ‘Either cut it or get Wednesday to knock someone out and it’s done,'” she revealed.
