Health of coach Bill Self on the minds of Jayhawks fans

                The Kansas Jayhawks will be without head coach Bill Self for the remainder of the Big 12 Tournament due to an illness.  Self was hospitalized Thursday morning and did not practice in KU's opening win against the West Virginia Mountaineers.  Doctors said Self did not suffer a heart attack, but a routine procedure was performed Wednesday night.  The hospital said this in a statement: "KU Men's Basketball Coach Bill Self is a patient at the University of Kansas Health System. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Steve Stites would like to clarify that Coach Self did not suffer a heart attack as reported by some media outlets. He arrived to the ER last night and underwent a standard procedure that went well. He is expected to make a full recovery. No further medical details will be released at this time."  Meanwhile, Self said he's grateful for the support. "I'm very grateful for the overwhelming number of well-wishes my family and I have received.  I'm excited to get back with my team in the very near future," Self said in a statement. Kansas Jayhawks assistant coach Norm Roberts will serve as head coach for the remainder of the tournament. KU plays Iowa State Friday night at p.m. It will be a rubber match between the two teams. Iowa State defeated KU in Ames, while KU won the game in Lawrence. Kansas fans shocked by the news After the win, Self's health was top of mind for KU fans "Our prayers go out to him first and foremost and his family," said KU fan Tori Oblong. "I think that's the most important thing right now." With assistant coach Norm Roberts leading the team, fans are still confident of moving. into March Madness and hope, that Self will have a speedy recovery. "We hope he recovers quickly and that the team continues to play in his honor with him in mind," Oblong said. "I think Norm will do a good job with to captain the team going forward." Even the status of the NCAA Tournament is unknown at this time  e time.
