Kansas coach Bill Self will miss the Jayhawks’ Big 12 quarterfinal game Thursday due to illness, the school announced in a release.
Assistant coach Norm Roberts will lead the team in their quarterfinal showdown with West Virginia. The university did not provide further details about Self’s illness, saying only in a statement that he is doing well and recovering and “is receiving great care at the University of Kansas Health System.”
There is no word on whether Self would rejoin the team in Kansas City if the Jayhawks move up.
Kansas enters the Big 12 Tournament ranked No. 4 with a 25-6 record and in contention for the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament when the field is announced Sunday. Self won his second national title at the school last season, beating North Carolina in the championship game.

Self was present for a shoot-around at the T-Mobile Center on Wednesday and appeared to be in normal condition. He met with reporters for about 20 minutes outside the locker room and said his team was ready for another run in March.
“We’ve talked about going to Kansas City to try to put ourselves in position to win this thing, but knowing that we better take it one game at a time,” he said. “I’ve been emphasizing let’s play our best. What the (Big 12) tournament does, it can validate what your regular season has been. And this is an opportunity to validate that.”
