BCE 2Q Profit Slips While Internet, Mobile Subscriptions Drive Revenue Growth

BCE Inc., formerly Bell Canada Enterprises Inc., on Thursday reported a 13% fall in second-quarter profit, while revenue benefited from higher internet and mobile activations in the period.

The Canadian telecommunications company said earnings per share were 66 Canadian cents (51 US cents), down from C$0.76 in the comparable quarter a year ago. Net earnings fell to C$654 million from C$734 million a year ago.

Adjusted earnings were C$0.87 a share. According to FactSet, analysts were expecting C$0.84 a share.

Operating revenues rose to C$5.86 billion from C$5.7 billion, in line with analyst expectations.

The company said it had growth of nearly 140% in its mobile phone net subscriber activations, while retail internet net activations rose 28% to 22,620 in the quarter.
